As we step into 2025, Sight & Sound Theatre in Branson has delivered yet another breathtaking production with David. For anyone who’s experienced a show at Sight & Sound, you know to expect incredible sets, stirring music, elaborate costumes, a talented cast, and, of course, plenty of animals. And with David, they’ve hit the high notes once again—delivering a show that stands shoulder to shoulder with their most beloved productions. In fact, it’s as close to Jesus as any other show, in my opinion.

Let’s take a closer look at the show and dive into what makes it a must-see, especially when compared to some Sight & Sound productions, like Noah and Esther, that have vied for second place in my heart over the years.

Music: A Moving Masterpiece

If one thing stood out in David, it’s the music. Undoubtedly, I’m ranking David number one in the music category. The musical score is rich, powerful, and profoundly moving. Several solos with the harp genuinely tug at your testimony, ushering the spirit into the auditorium.

The entertainer who plays David’s mother opens the show with a performance that steals the spotlight. Her voice and presence command the stage from the very first note. It’s a powerful start, and although we don’t see her much as David ages, her impact lingers throughout the show. Truly, her performance is nothing short of amazing.

Costumes: A Thoughtful Touch

In terms of costumes, David is a little more understated compared to some of the more elaborate designs we’ve seen in other shows like Esther.   (I would still crown Esther the best when it comes to extravagant costumes.)

The costumes in David are appropriately designed to reflect the simplicity and dignity of the story, and they serve the narrative without overshadowing it. It’s a perfect fit for the story they’re telling.

Sets: A Lyrical Journey

The sets in David are a visual treat, almost lyrical in their movement. The way they shift and transform throughout the show creates an immersive experience that feels almost like the music itself. The scale is massive, and as always, the spectacle of Sight & Sound’s production is stunning.

However, I can’t help but compare it to the opening of the ark in Noah—an iconic moment in Sight & Sound history.

The sheer size and grandeur of the ark are unparalleled, and it’s impossible to truly take it all in the first time  you see it.

If we look at Goliath and his brothers in David, the giant puppets are mind-blowing in their own right, but the scale of the ark in Noah is still unbeatable.

Goliath: The Giant

When Goliath made his entrance, there were audible gasps from the audience. But as the giant puppet began to move, a hush fell over the crowd—a stillness so profound, you could’ve heard a pin drop.

The life-like motion of the giant was nothing short of mesmerizing; with each stomp and jump, he felt real, towering at an impressive 15 feet tall. On a platform, he rose to about 26 feet, dwarfing the cast and crew.

As the moment of confrontation arrived, and the rock struck his head, Goliath’s body jerked backward in a realistic motion before slowly leaning forward in the dramatic fall. The quiet anticipation in the air as he descended was palpable. Then, when he hit the ground, the theatre seemed to shake, and the crowd erupted in wild applause, overwhelmed by the sheer spectacle of it all.

This moment is only rivaled by when David faces the four brothers of Goliath. The audience responded similarly—utterly silent as each giant was defeated, their attention rapt until the final brother fell. At that moment, the crowd lost it, mirroring the intense scene on the stage.

Animals: Delightful and Endearing

One thing Sight & Sound always delivers is the animals, and David is no exception. The sheep in this production are an absolute highlight, providing moments of joy and levity. Watching them frolic down the aisles is pure magic. They are often present on stage, adding charm and energy to the show. It’s always fun to see them dance, and they really bring a playful, lively vibe to the production.

The Audience Experience: A New Perspective

This time, I had the opportunity to watch from the “stands,” and I have to say, it gave me an entirely new perspective on the show. The angle, the intimacy, and the size of the production felt different, and I loved it. I recommend trying this seating option for a fresh take on the experience!

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, David at Sight & Sound Theatre is a stunning addition to their lineup. While Jesus will always be my favorite, and Noah and Esther will forever hold their special places in my heart, David stands tall among them as an exceptional production.

From the powerful music and moving sets to the unforgettable performances and delightful animals, David hits all the right notes.

The ministry at Sight & Sound is always a cornerstone of their productions, and David is no exception. The gospel lessons, especially the theme of repentance, resonate deeply. The scene where David, in his lowest moment, begs for forgiveness and is cleansed by falling snow is an experience that transcends the stage and touches the hearts of the audience. When snow falls on the crowd, it feels as though we, too, are reminded of our own mistakes and the grace of forgiveness.

If you haven’t seen David yet, I highly recommend making the trip to Branson. Sight & Sound has once again done what they do best, and David is an experience you won’t want to miss.
